Brewed by Christian Galbraith for our Gladfield American Ale Homebrew Showcase, this recipe was judged in second place. It has a great balance between malt complexity and fresh hop flavour as well as being fantastic to look at.

BREWER’S NOTES

This beer was inspired by Hop Federation’s Red IPA and was my first time using Gladfield malts. I was interested in using both their base and specialty malts over European counterparts and was very happy with the result (will definitely be using again). The main focus of the beer is the deep red colour and accompanying complex flavours from the specialty malts. Additional flavour and counterbalance to the sweetness comes from three classic American hops varieties.

In brewing this recipe again, I would leave the malts unchanged but consider adjusting the hops. The dry hopping added a resinous quality which conflicted with the smoothness of the malt and reduced the finish. I would dry hop for a very short period of time or do away with this altogether and adjust the other hop additions to compensate.
